Both...I'm not a purse person but I always carry messenger bags as a purse substitute. This bag can be used as either a purse or to carry school books. It's whatever you want it to be.

Is there a pocket on the back? How many pockets on the inside? is there a separate (sometimes totes have a middle separator for a laptop to go on one side).

Hello,

The image for the item shows a small space behind the face of this bag. In my opinion it doesn't look to be specifically for a tablet or laptop but it is a pocket space you can utilize at your own convenience.
