I have a 12 year old about 5"6 or 5"8 I bought a size 20 fits good around the waist loosely

The waist measurement isnt there just the size. So look at the cut of the pants and buy a size bigger than what he wears to be on the safe side, you could always hem. Note: southpole runs true to size.
